Sports and Outdoors
When it comes to sports, Oklahoma City is in the big leagues. Our NBA team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, plays to packed crowds in the OKC Arena, and hockey fans enjoy watching the Oklahoma City Barons (AHL affiliate of the NHL Edmonton Oilers) shred the ice in the Cox Center Arena next door. One of the best ways to enjoy the great outdoors in Oklahoma City is to take in a Redhawks baseball game at the Bricktown Ballpark. Speaking of Bricktown, the IFL Bricktown Brawlers bring the high-scoring, heavy-hitting excitement of indoor football to OKC as well.
This is a city made for recreation too, with more than 50 lakes within an hour’s drive, 83 miles of trails, and 33 public and private golf courses. Oklahoma City’s extensive 140 park system provides attractive, well-maintained areas for playing tennis, swimming, biking, jogging, and even horseback riding. And there's the Matt Hoffman Action Sports Park, which is a 26,000 square-foot skate park for those interested in skateboards, inline-skating or BMX freestyle biking.
The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department maintains more than 50 neighborhood tennis courts throughout the area. The Oklahoma City Tennis Center in Will Rogers Park has 24 tennis courts and a full service pro-shop.
Oklahoma City has three disc golf courses, which provide physical and mental conditioning for all ages. The Will Rogers Park course offers scenic water hazards, Dolese Youth Park features rolling hills and tress, and Woodson’s Park is long, flat, and open. The three courses are of different difficulty levels, but equally fun.
Fishing and boating are available at Lake Hefner, Lake Draper, and Lake Overholser. Enjoy water skiing and jet skiing on Lake Draper, which is Oklahoma City’s largest lake. The two-acre Paw Park across from Lake Hefner is an off-leash secured area for dogs and their owners to utilize and enjoy the water stations, trees, benches, and pond.
